When the Province of Badajoz in Extremadura was dissolved in 1996, many locals in the poor and largely rural province, who were disappointed at losing local government, asked that the new smaller districts be called “provincio,” a Spanish word that means “province.” Thus, the official name of the largest of the six new provinces is simply Badajoz, though the “Province of Badajoz” was also included on the local election ballot. Then, there is a lot of confusion surrounding the “Spanish Nation.” While the Queen and the head of state is the king of Spain (either Carlos V or Felipe VI), the President of the country is the king’s representative, the king’s foreign minister. The law and government of the country is made in the capital city of Madrid, and the constitution, or the set of laws that defines the basic structure of the country, is made by the Spanish parliament. In theory, there is only one Spanish language. Castilian (or Spanish) is considered the basis and for centuries the official language of the country, and although the Andalusian dialects are not unintelligible, when in Extremadura, Andalucia or other parts of Spain, you use the Spanish language, you’re speaking Spanish and the locals understand you perfectly. In fact, there are several different varieties of Spanish. In Cuba, the official language is Cuban Spanish, but the local dialect is Havana-Cubano, which is the same as the dialect spoken in Spain and several other Latin American countries. The Puerto Rican and Dominican dialects of Spanish are quite different from Spanish-speaking parts of Spain.
